No real, major differences as far as I can tell. This one has "made in the USA" stitched on the logo, but otherwise it's the same backpack as everyone in here is talking about, and I've felt the ones made nowadays- they feel about the same. there's some light fraying around the second pocket, but the zipper is 100% fine, the stitching is pretty good, and it has been used continuously for 30+ years. I actually am using the one my dad used in the '80s. The mods are somewhat flexible with the rules as long as the OP explains in the comments.
